Your teen is trying to figure out their identity.
How you can handle it: Show your teen that you love them, no matter which hat they are wearing. The identity may not last, but they will always remember how they felt during their self-discovery.
Your teen wants both structure and independence.
How you can handle it: Set firm expectations early, and stick to them. Accountability is crucial during these years. But remember, they’re figuring out their identity so listen to their wants and see if there is a compromise.
Your teen will make bad choices.
How you can handle it: Brain development is not complete and they will often
choose what is wanted over what is needed due to their development. Be sure to give choices and help your teen come to the better choice through coaching them and talking out scenarios in a factual manner.
