Health Sciences
The Health Science Pathway at Sand Creek High School prepares students for careers in healthcare through hands-on learning, career exploration, and real-world experiences. Students explore medical careers while developing foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, healthcare practices, and patient care. Through classroom activities, guest speakers, certifications, and industry-aligned experiences, students build the skills needed to pursue opportunities in healthcare and related fields.
Purpose of the Health Science Program:
Expose students to various health careers which include certification programs such as CNA, Phlebotomy, etc., and licensure programs such as Nursing, MD, Lab Technician, etc..
2 semester program: Adult medicine 1st semester and Labor and Delivery and Pediatrics 2nd semester
The courses are taught through the major systems of the body (Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Nervous, and Gastrointestinal). Students learn the basic anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the different systems.
The difference between this course and similar courses in other schools, our students experience medicine. They see and do things you would only do in professional programs (simulated surgeries, running codes, etc.) All of the experiences are within the framework of the body systems.
Students that are interested can apply for the health science capstone course, which is only for seniors. The current certifications are EKG Technician, Phlebotomy, and QMAP.
Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Introduction to Health Sciences
Students explore a variety of healthcare careers while learning about the human body through anatomy, physiology, and basic medical concepts. The course introduces students to different healthcare pathways and provides opportunities to investigate careers in the medical field.
Medical Terminology
Students learn the language of healthcare by studying medical prefixes, roots, suffixes, abbreviations, and terminology used in healthcare settings. This course provides a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and healthcare.
Anatomy & Physiology
Students study the structures and functions of the human body through hands-on activities, dissections, projects, presentations, and guest speakers. This course is designed for students interested in healthcare careers, athletics, or understanding how the human body works.
Health Science Capstone (Senior Year)
The Health Science Capstone provides seniors with the opportunity to earn industry certifications while gaining advanced healthcare knowledge and skills. Students may pursue certifications including Basic Life Support (BLS), Phlebotomy, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT), Qualified Medication Administration Person (QMAP), and EKG Technician.
Medical Assistant Program
The Medical Assistant program provides students with advanced healthcare training and internship experiences while preparing them for a nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification opportunity. Students gain experience with healthcare skills and professional practices through classroom instruction and real-world application.
Students completing the Health Science Pathway gain valuable preparation for college, industry certifications, healthcare training programs, and careers in healthcare fields.
